TAG organizer Steve Kaplan and IATSE Representatives Vanessa Holtgrewe and Peter Marley will be there to answer your questions and hand out rep cards (this time with postage paid envelopes!)

Heard lots of rumors about healthcare, and 401k plans? Not sure how the retirement benefits work? What would you like to see them do for you? Come by and ask them in person!

We can complain to each other all day and hope someone, someday, does something. Or, YOU can make a difference.

Besides stopping by, here’s what we need from you:

1. Tell everyone! We’re posting around the internet and talking in the halls to get the word out, and we need your help too. You could print out this post and hang it up in the halls. Help us get the word out.

2. We need volunteers willing to take back cards from Steve and hand them out at work. The discussion is out in the open now. Do not disrupt the workday with card distribution. Finish your work first, then hand out cards.

You don’t need to be a Sony employee to attend. All vfx artists are welcome.


Parking

Its best for anyone driving to the meeting to park in the Trader Joe’s lot located just east of the hotel and across the street from Imageworks, or at the Bank of America lot located on the other side of Culver across from the hotel.

    For those of us who can’t make it to the meeting I thought this would be a good place to post questions.

    1. Currently, many of us have health insurance with Sony. That will go away if Sony becomes union and then we have to work for six months before the union health benefits kick in. What are we supposed to do during that gap? Would a deal be worked out with Sony to keep all our current benefits until the union ones start? If that’s the plan, is there any guarantee that will happen?

    2. Since we would be on the Motion Picture Industry Health Plan we’d have to pay the new $25/$50 premium for dependants, correct?

    3. Who sets the union dues amounts and when/how often are they increased?

      Sorry to hear you won’t be able to make it. Feel free to contact me with any further questions or concerns you have. I’d be glad to answer in person or through email.

      1) Typically, it takes six months working under a union contract to being participation in the MPI Health Plans. A deal could be worked with Sony to bridge that time, but that would have to be hammered out in negotiations. There can never be guarantees in what will come from negotiations. Its an organic process and both sides will work hard to get what they want.

      2) The premiums that have been announced will go into effect once the contract has been ratified by the IATSE membership. Since that has not happened, its not certain the premiums are a concern. However, for the sake of your question, let’s hypothetically say they are included. They are planned to be assessed monthly and paid quarterly. For MPI participants who are single, there is no premium. For participants who wish to cover one eligible party, there is a $25 monthly premium ($75 a quarter). For participants who wish to cover two or more eligible parties, there will be a $50 monthly premium ($150 a quarter).

      3) The union dues will be set by the IATSE. If the Imageworks artists are covered as the SPA artists and pay their dues to Local 839, our dues have seen a $1 per quarter raise the last two years. Before that, they remained the same for 5-6 years before being raised again.

    By far the best health plan I’ve ever had has been with the union. As a matter of fact since ending my stay in Image Movers Digital almost two years ago…I’m still covered. Union members that acquire 15 yrs of membership on the other IATSE plans get LIFETIME health care. Keep in mind that there is a residual from the projects that members work on that helps fund their health and pension plans..and right now your efforts are going towards funding the rest of the talents health and pension except you own. These plans follow members from site to site when they work at union shops. Not to mention you’ll have a voice when it comes to our dwindling rights as workers. You’ll have some leverage in a world where without it you’ll eventually experience what that entails. What many are experiencing now.

    Entering any business relationship and surrendering all the leverage to the other party is the fastest way to becoming a victim of your own circumstance.
